Nigeria - INEC Launches Nationwide Voter Registration with 69,376 Online Sign-Ups in First 7 Hours
Summary
INEC begins nationwide voter registration with 69,376 Nigerians signing up online in just 7 hours. The CVR exercise includes online and in-person options for new and returning voters.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced its Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) nationwide, beginning with pre-registration online. From August 18, 2025, qualified Nigerians aged 18 years and older can register via the portal (https://cvr.inecnigeria.org) prior to physical registration, which begins on August 25 in all 37 state offices and 774 local government offices.
In just seven hours since the portal opened, INEC had recorded an impressive 69,376 online pre-registrations. Of this number, 51.3% were females and 48.7% were men, with 69.2% of the overall figure being young Nigerians from the 18–34 years category. The commission noted that the CVR continues to be open to new registrants, those who wish to transfer or change their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and those whose cards are lost or destroyed.
INEC kept its commitment to democratic consolidation and inclusivity, inviting the people to forgo multiple registrations, which are illegal. Online and offline registration will both go on simultaneously during CVR, and a weekly demographic update and participation will be provided.
This initiative is a giant leap towards offering mass electoral engagement before subsequent elections. INEC encourages all eligible Nigerians to take advantage of this registration process and contribute to the nation's democratic future.
