Nigeria Frees 308 Kidnapping Victims in Largest Single-Day Rescue Operation

Nigeria’s government says security forces just pulled off a huge operation, rescuing 308 kidnapped people in Niger and Kwara States. These victims—snatched in separate attacks earlier in the year—were found in the dense forests around Kainji Lake National Park in Niger State.

This wasn’t a small effort. The National Counter Terrorism Centre, armed forces, police, and state security services all worked together. Officials say it’s actually the biggest single-day rescue Nigeria’s joint security team has ever managed.

Among those freed, 163 were taken during a bloody assault on Woro Community in Kwara back in February—a night when at least 200 people lost their lives. Another 145 were abducted in Niger State. These armed gangs, connected to both Boko Haram and local bandit groups, have been terrorizing vulnerable communities for ransom.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu didn’t waste words—he praised the courage of the security teams and said the mission shows agencies are finally working well together. He keeps stressing his commitment to break up these criminal networks and keep Nigerians safe.

Right now, kidnapping for ransom feels like a national emergency. Schools, churches, mosques—no one is off-limits, especially in remote areas. Just earlier this year, mass abductions shook Kaduna and Oyo States, making it clear how serious the problem is.

Officials in both Kwara and Niger celebrated the safe return of their people and called the operation a big win. Still, they admit it’s not over yet. There’s relief, for sure, but they say Nigeria needs to keep up the pressure and protect its communities if it hopes to stop kidnappings like these from happening again.
