North Korea Executes Second Ballistic Missile Launch in One Week Ahead of Allied Military Drills

North Korea fired another ballistic missile into the East Sea early Wednesday—its second such test in less than a week, with tensions in the region climbing. Defense officials say the launch happened around 6 a.m. local time, with the missile shot from Wonsan on the eastern coast. It landed in the water, outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, and didn't cause any immediate problems for ships or planes in the area.

Right after the launch, South Korea stepped up its military alertness and started sharing tracking data with the US and Japan. Both allies are taking a close look at what happened, and while they say the missile didn’t threaten their own territories or people, the move sends a clear message—North Korea’s not backing down.

This latest launch comes just days after a similar short-range missile test from the same region. The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, which runs through August 27, is all about sharpening the allies’ defense skills with a mix of field training, simulations, and live maneuvers to tackle growing security challenges.

North Korea has always called these annual drills a rehearsal for invasion. It often uses them as a reason to ramp up its own military show-of-force, arguing that it needs stronger missiles and a more powerful navy. Even with international sanctions and repeated warnings about breaking global security rules, North Korea keeps firing off missiles—making it clear that tensions on the Korean Peninsula aren’t going away any time soon.
