Emergency personnel responded promptly, and forensic examiners recovered pieces of surfboard for examination.
Beaches along Manly to Narrabeen were shut at least for 24 hours by authorities, who dispatched lifeguards and drones to monitor shark activity. Surf lifesaving training and water activities for the weekend were cancelled.
This is Sydney's first deadly shark attack since 2022 and only its second since 1963. The species is not yet identified, and marine authorities are conducting an investigation. The attack contributes to a disturbing trend in 2025, which already counts three other deadly shark attacks on the country.
