Darjeeling Devastated: Torrential Rains Trigger Deadly Landslides, Leave Dozens Dead and Villages Isolated

Cloudbursts have induced huge landslides on the Darjeeling hills, and at least 20 lives have been lost and two others reported missing. The disaster took place in different localities like Mirik, Jasbirgaon, Sarsaly, Dhar Gaon, and the Mirik Lake area, where homes were destroyed and roads were swept away. Rescue operations are ongoing, but the incessant rain and difficult terrain have severely affected the process.

Mirik suffered most with eleven reported casualties and widespread damage. Six deaths have been reported in Darjeeling subdivision, and hundreds of tourists are stranded with roads blocked and bridges destroyed. Relief camps have been set up in safer locales like Bishnulal Gaon and Ward 3 Lake Side, which are sheltering internally displaced families.

India Meteorological Department issued a red alert over sub-Himalayan West Bengal, forecassting constant heavy rain and further landslides. In 12 hours, the rain was more than 300 mm, and the water-saturated soil triggered mudslides that razed houses and snapped communication channels.

Local officials are focusing on the rescue of missing individuals and reconnecting severed communities. It is extremely challenging for rescue personnel and earthmovers to drive on steep, slippery slopes. The government has assured compensation and support to the affected families, urging tourists not to panic but to remain calm.

This tragedy happens at the time of festivity, disrupting celebration and holiday travel. The situation is serious, with officials closely monitoring the situation and coordinating relief measures across the region.
