Chelsea Confirm Official Signing of Spanish Left Back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano on Five Year Deal

Chelsea just wrapped up the signing of Spanish left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano, marking another big step in their squad overhaul for the 2026/27 season. The 28-year-old agreed to a five-year deal, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2031. Chelsea paid an initial £16.3 million, with another £1.7 million possible in add-ons, after weeks of talks to get the deal done.

Chavarria comes in to fill the gap left by Marc Cucurella, who headed to Real Madrid earlier in the window. This move shows Chelsea’s shifting strategy under new boss Xabi Alonso—he’s now focused on experience and immediate results, not just up-and-coming talent. Chavarria worked his way up through the Spanish lower leagues, playing for UE Figueres and UE Olot before moving to Real Zaragoza in 2020. He broke into La Liga two years later with Rayo Vallecano. Over the past two seasons, he became a regular starter and helped the club secure back-to-back eighth-place finishes. Last season, he made 44 appearances and was instrumental in Rayo’s run to the UEFA Conference League final, where they lost a tight match to Crystal Palace.
