Afghanistan Clinches Automatic Spot in 2027 ODI World Cup as West Indies Head to Qualifiers

Afghanistan just grabbed a spot in the 2027 men's ODI World Cup after defeating Ireland by three wickets in a tense third ODI in Belfast. That win pushed them into the top eight of the ICC ODI rankings for the September 30, 2026 cut-off, not counting South Africa and Zimbabwe, who are both hosting.

So, Afghanistan joins Australia—the defending champs—plus India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, and Bangladesh in the automatic qualifiers. South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia are already in as co-hosts.

Meanwhile, the West Indies, who sit in tenth place, have run out of chances for an automatic spot—even if they win their last two ODIs against India before the deadline. For the third World Cup in a row, these two-time champions will have to go through the Qualifier path. They managed it in 2019 but missed out in 2023, marking the first time the men’s team sat out a 50-over World Cup. They also missed the subsequent Champions Trophy.

The Qualifier tournament is set for February to March 2027. The winner goes straight into stage two of the main World Cup. The teams finishing second, third, and fourth will play a Super Series for another shot at making it. The Qualifier will include the two lowest-ranked non-host Full Members (that’s West Indies and Ireland), the top four from Cricket World Cup League 2, and four more teams from a Playoff involving the lower League 2 and Challenge League teams.

Afghanistan’s rise just keeps rolling—they’re showing real consistency in ODIs. The West Indies, though, are staring down another tough qualifying run if they want back in on world cricket’s biggest stage.
