Tears in Gondomar: Diogo Jota and Brother Andre Silva Laid to Rest After Tragic Crash
Summary
Diogo Jota and brother André Silva were laid to rest in Portugal after a tragic car crash, as footballers and family gathered to mourn.
In a tearful farewell, Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his 25-year-old younger brother André Silva were laid to rest in their home town of Gondomar, Portugal, following a fatal car crash in Spain. The 28-year-old and 25-year-old brothers died when their Lamborghini skidded off the road and burst into flames in Zamora. The crash occurred only 11 days after Jota married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso, with whom he had three young children.
There were hundreds in attendance at the funeral at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, including Liverpool teammates and members of the Portuguese national team. Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, and Ruben Neves, who acted as a pallbearer, were among other players that walked in a somber parade with wreaths that looked like football jerseys with the brothers' numbers.
Jota's wife, Rute, visibly in tears, clung to his coffin during the ceremony. The Porto Bishop addressed their children in absentia, praying and consATABLOWing the grieving family. The ceremony was accompanied by playing Schubert's "Ave Maria," the same tune that had been played at Jota's wedding.
Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo was also missing but paid a public tribute on social media, saying, "It doesn't make sense. We were just together in the national team, and you had just gotten married."
The football community is shocked and devastated at the demise of two wonderful people whose memory will be cherished by fans, teammates, and family.
