Liverpool Parade Tragedy: Dozens Injured as Car Ploughs into Celebratory Crowd
Summary
Car crashes into Liverpool FC parade crowd; 65 injured, 11 hospitalized; suspect arrested for attempted murder.
On the evening of May 26, 2025, a beautiful and cheerful evening in Liverpool turned into a sad situation when a vehicle hit a number of people in Liverpool FC's Premier League victory parade with tragic results. At about 6:00 PM BST on Water Street, near the Liver Building, the city's landmark, thousands of fans were there to join the celebration of the team's victory.
Due to the accident, police cordoned off the location of the parade. As a consequence, the parade was canceled and the players and the staff were not available for the speeches that had been prepared, it also became a mournful and mostly silent street. Hundreds of the supporters, not knowing what else to do, moved over to the players' homes to show their support even at this difficult moment.
The deceased, a male in his 60s, hailed from the Old Swan district. The victim was at the front of the crowd, and the first hit by the windscreen of the car died at the site of the incident. Two female victims from the Fazakerley and Anfield areas of Liverpool were declared dead by medics on arrival at Royton Hospital. Heirold, later identified as the driver of the death car, was the suspect, who was found in Walnut Lane and taken away by police officers. He was also taken to the same hospital to be given some medical care as he had his hand somehow injured. In the meantime, the third horribly injured person, a Brazilian student at the University of Liverpool, Urszula Sowinska, has died in the hospital. She had severe head injuries and had been desperately fighting for 5 hours for her life before releasing her soul of its pain.
These are the people who lost their lives in the tragedy: Keith Mather aged 75, of Mossley Hill, Alice Garston aged 69, of Lydiate, and William Donnelly aged 53, of Croxteth, a construction worker and football player in Knowsley. William became unconscious immediately after he was run over and never regained consciousness. He died five days later in hospital without gaining consciousness. Apart from William, all of the victims died at the hospital a few hours after the incident. Their deaths came as a great shock to their relatives, friends, and all the people who knew them.
The police spoke to Mr. Mather's sister, Mrs. Williams, who sadly said that her brother had a lot of health problems and was due to have surgery in August. The police also visited Mrs. Garston's elderly neighbors and friends and although they were used to her kindness, they still were surprised and very sad to hear the news of her death. The police were very sorry to have to tell the parents of young Mr. Donnelly the bad news of their son's death. He was known as an exemplary employee and was greatly admired by his friends, teammates, and colleagues alike. Besides being a well-mannered person, he was humble and hard-working. The police firstly informed Mr. Heirold's wife of the incident because she is the one who is usually in contact with him than other family members. In addition, Mrs. Urszula Sowinska's parents and colleagues from her university were contacted by the police to receive the unimaginable news of Urszula's end.
