Israel and Iran Exchange Fresh Strikes as Tensions Spiral
Summary
Israel and Iran traded air and missile strikes on June 15, killing civilians, prompting mass evacuations and driving oil prices up amid international alarm.
Israel and Iran opened up a fresh cycle of missile attacks and airstrikes on June 15, heightening fears of an expanding conflict in the Middle East. Explosions rocked the fuel storage depot in Tehran and residential neighborhoods in Haifa and Tel Aviv, killing scores and wounding hundreds on both sides. Both armies asked civilians in areas targeted by the fighting to evacuate immediately as the conflict entered its third day.
Israeli warplanes attacked surface-to-surface missile installations in central Iran, warning residents within neighborhoods surrounding strategic facilities to leave the area for their own interests. Iran's Revolutionary Guards struck back with daytime and nighttime attacks on Israeli cities, killing civilians and causing widespread damage to property.
In Tehran, at least 224 were killed 90% of them civilians and over 1,200 injured since the attacks began, including 60 killed in one collapse of an apartment tower. In Israel, at least 10 people were confirmed dead from Iranian missiles and dozens wounded as the country's sirens and shelter alerts blared.
Tehran photos showed a massive blaze in the Shahran oil depot after an Israeli raid on Iran's energy facilities, triggering a near 3% surge in Brent crude to $76.37 a barrel and similar gains in U.S. benchmarks. The strikes on oil and gas sites have stoked concerns of volatility in global markets.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on the leaders of the G7, convening in Canada, to look for a diplomatic solution to the crisis, while Iran's foreign ministry dismissed ceasefire negotiations under attack. "We are not willing to negotiate while being attacked," an Iranian official said in Doha.
In Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump vetoed an Israeli proposal to strike Iran's Supreme Leader, warning that American troops would retaliate if Tehran attacked U.S. targets. "If we are attacked in any way, the full fury of the U.S. Armed Forces will be unleashed upon you," he declared on.
